17-4 PH Stainless Steel Sheet is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel that combines high strength, corrosion resistance, and hardness in a single material. Known by its UNS designation S17400, it is one of the most widely used precipitation-hardening stainless steels for sheets, plates, bars, and forgings.
The “17-4” name refers to its approximate composition of 17% chromium and 4% nickel, with small amounts of copper and niobium (columbium) that enable precipitation hardening through heat treatment.
Available in sheets, strips, and plates, 17-4 PH stainless steel offers an excellent balance of corrosion resistance (close to 304 stainless steel) and mechanical strength (comparable to high-strength alloys).
Chemical CompositionThe controlled composition ensures strength, corrosion resistance, and hardening capability.
| Element | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 15.0 – 17.5 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 3.0 – 5.0 |
| Copper (Cu) | 3.0 – 5.0 |
| Niobium + Tantalum (Cb + Ta) | 0.15 – 0.45 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.0 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.0 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.07 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.04 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.03 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |

Mechanical properties vary depending on heat treatment condition:
| Heat Treatment | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HRC) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Condition A (Solution Annealed) | 930 | 725 | 16 | ~35 HRC |
| Condition H900 | 1310 | 1170 | 10 | 40–47 HRC |
| Condition H1025 | 1170 | 1035 | 12 | 36–42 HRC |
| Condition H1075 | 1140 | 1000 | 14 | 34–40 HRC |
| Condition H1150 | 1060 | 965 | 16 | 28–35 HRC |
The key feature of 17-4 PH stainless steel sheets is their ability to be precipitation hardened.
Solution Annealing (Condition A): Heat to ~1040 °C, followed by air cooling.
Aging (Hardening): Heat between 480 – 620 °C depending on desired mechanical properties.
Different conditions (H900, H1025, H1075, H1150) allow customization of strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance.
