Introduction

Hastelloy is a trademarked name for a family of corrosion-resistant metal alloys primarily composed of nickel, molybdenum, iron, and chromium. Among the many forged fittings made from Hastelloy, the forged tee stands out as a crucial component used to divert or combine fluid flow within piping systems. Whether in chemical processing, petrochemical refining, power generation, or marine environments, Hastelloy forged tees deliver exceptional performance where aggressive corrosion and extreme temperatures prevail.

This comprehensive guide covers the chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing processes, types, industry applications, specifications, and advantages of Hastelloy forged tees. It aims to support informed material selection and design decision-making for critical piping systems.

The most commonly used Hastelloy grades

  • Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276): Known for universal corrosion resistance, especially against oxidizing and reducing agents.

  • Hastelloy C-22 (UNS N06022): Superior resistance to crevice corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking.

  • Hastelloy X (UNS N06002): High-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.

  • Hastelloy B2 (UNS N10665): Excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid and other strong reducing media.

 What is a Forged Tee?

A forged tee is a pipe fitting shaped like the letter 'T' used to combine or split the flow of fluids in a piping system. It has three openings:

  • One inlet and two outlets (for branching flow)

  • Or two inlets and one outlet (for converging flow)

Introduction

Hastelloy socket weld flanges are a type of high-performance forged flange designed for small-diameter, high-pressure piping systems. They are specifically engineered for pipelines where leak-proof, strong, and corrosion-resistant connections are critical. Unlike slip-on flanges, socket weld flanges feature a socket-like recess into which the pipe is inserted before fillet welding, ensuring strong joint integrity.

When manufactured from Hastelloy alloys (nickel-molybdenum-chromium family), these flanges exhibit outstanding corrosion resistance in both oxidizing and reducing environments. They are widely used in chemical processing, petrochemicals, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, marine, and power generation industries, where equipment faces chlorides, strong acids, oxidizing agents, and high-temperature exposure.

Introduction

Hastelloy slip-on flanges are high-performance piping components made from the nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloy family known as Hastelloy. Designed to be slipped over a pipe and welded at both the inside and outside, slip-on flanges provide a secure, leak-proof, and durable connection for pipelines in critical industries.

Unlike standard stainless steel or carbon steel flanges, Hastelloy slip-on flanges exhibit superior resistance to both oxidizing and reducing environments, making them highly suitable for chemical processing, petrochemical refining, marine environments, power generation, and aerospace applications.

The butt-welding and fillet welding capability of slip-on flanges ensures better alignment, reduced installation time, and excellent durability.

 Introduction

Hastelloy stub ends are critical piping components designed to be used with lap joint flanges to form a high-performance, corrosion-resistant, and easily replaceable flange connection. Unlike conventional welded flanges, stub ends allow the flange to rotate freely around the pipe, simplifying bolt alignment, assembly, and disassembly in pipelines.

Manufactured from nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloys, Hastelloy stub ends are specifically engineered to withstand aggressive chemical environments, oxidizing and reducing agents, and high temperatures. These qualities make them invaluable in industries such as chemical processing, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, marine engineering, pulp & paper, and power generation.

Introduction

In modern industries where chemical processing, oil and gas exploration, power generation, and marine engineering play pivotal roles, the demand for robust, corrosion-resistant, and reliable pipeline components has never been greater. Among the many crucial fittings used to connect and regulate pipelines, reducing flanges stand out as a versatile solution that allows the connection of pipes of varying diameters.

When manufactured from Hastelloy, a family of nickel–molybdenum–iron–chromium alloys renowned for their superior resistance to aggressive chemical environments, reducing flanges offer exceptional durability, mechanical integrity, and resistance to localized corrosion. This makes them a critical component in industries where conventional stainless steel or carbon steel fittings would quickly fail.

 Introduction

In industrial systems that deal with corrosive chemicals, extreme temperatures, and high-pressure operations, the importance of reliable piping components cannot be overstated. Among these, flanges are essential for connecting pipes, valves, and equipment securely. One specialized category is the screwed flange, which connects through threaded fastening rather than welding.

When made from Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276), these flanges deliver exceptional corrosion resistance, strength, and durability in aggressive chemical environments. Hastelloy C276 Screwed Flanges are widely used in industries such as chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, power generation, marine, oil & gas, and pollution control equipment.

Introduction

Hastelloy X fittings are specialized piping components manufactured from Hastelloy X (UNS N06002), a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy renowned for its high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Unlike stainless steel or standard nickel alloys, Hastelloy X excels in oxidizing, carburizing, and reducing environments, especially in applications requiring structural stability above 1000°C (1832°F).

Hastelloy X pipe fittings are essential in aerospace, gas turbines, nuclear reactors, petrochemicals, and furnace equipment where both corrosion resistance and high-temperature mechanical strength are mandatory.

Common types of Hastelloy X fittings include:

  • Butt-weld fittings – elbows, tees, reducers, stub ends, caps.

  • Forged fittings – couplings, unions, plugs, bushings.

  • Custom fittings – for specialized high-temperature applications.
