 Introduction

Materials used in industries such as oil & gas, aerospace, marine engineering, chemical processing, and power generation face aggressive environments that demand alloys with exceptional properties. Conventional stainless steels often fail under such conditions due to chloride-induced corrosion, high-temperature oxidation, and creep.

This is where Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) stands out. It is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium additions, developed to provide:

  • Excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion across a wide range of environments.

  • Outstanding strength without heat treatment (solid solution strengthened).

  • High fatigue and creep resistance at elevated temperatures.

  • Fabricability — weldable, formable, machinable.

In the form of round bars, Inconel 625 is widely used for:

  • Shafts and fasteners.

  • Valve stems and pump shafts.

  • Marine hardware.

  • Aerospace engine components.

  • Chemical processing plant parts.

ASTM standards covering Inconel 625 round bars include ASTM B446 (bars & rods), ASTM B564 (forgings, flanges), ASTM B443 (plates/sheets).
