ASTM B865 UNS N05500 refers to the standard specification for forged or rolled bar, rod, and wire made from Monel K-500, a nickel-copper alloy strengthened by age-hardening (precipitation hardening). Monel K-500 is an evolution of the classical Monel 400 (UNS N04400) alloy, combining its excellent corrosion resistance with significantly higher mechanical strength, hardness, and fatigue resistance.
Developed in the mid-20th century, Monel K-500 has become indispensable in industries that demand exceptional resistance to seawater, marine atmospheres, sour gas environments, and high mechanical stress. It is widely used in oil & gas, marine engineering, aerospace, chemical processing, and pump/valve manufacturing.
Chemical Composition of ASTM B865 UNS N05500The strength of Monel K-500 comes from its nickel-copper base with controlled additions of aluminum and titanium, which allow precipitation hardening.
| Element | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 63.0 – 70.0 |
| Copper (Cu) | 27.0 – 33.0 |
| Aluminum (Al) | 2.3 – 3.15 |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.35 – 0.85 |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 2.0 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.5 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.5 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.25 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.01 |
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 8.44 g/cm³ |
| Melting Point | 1315 – 1350 °C |
| Thermal Conductivity | 17 W/m·K |
| Specific Heat Capacity | 427 J/kg·K |
| Modulus of Elasticity | 179 GPa |
| Magnetic Properties | Slightly magnetic after age-hardening |
Mechanical properties of ASTM B865 (Monel K-500) depend on the heat treatment condition (annealed vs. age-hardened).
| Condition | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HRC) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed | 760 | 345 | 30 | ~20 |
| Age-Hardened (Typical) | 1100 – 1310 | 790 – 1000 | 15 | 28 – 35 |
The strength of ASTM B865 (Monel K-500) comes from precipitation hardening:
Solution Annealing – Heated to ~960 °C, then rapidly quenched.
Age Hardening – Reheated to 480–620 °C for several hours. This forms Ni₃(Al,Ti) precipitates, increasing hardness and tensile strength.
Tensile Testing (ASTM E8/E8M)
Hardness Testing (ASTM E18)
Non-Destructive Testing: Ultrasonic, Eddy Current, Magnetic Particle
Corrosion Testing: ASTM G48, NACE MR0175 for sour gas resistance
Dimensional Inspection: Thread checks for fasteners
